The Grand Prix national des arts
In 1959 the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris awarded Ernst the Grand Prix national des arts.

Retrospectives: MoMA, the Tate, Zurich
Major exhibitions of Ernst’s work were held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1961), the Tate Gallery in London (1962) and the Kunsthaus Zürich (1963).

The move to Seillans
In 1963 Ernst moved to the south-east of France, to the Provençal town of Seillans in the Var.
