    Asylum for Leon Trotsky

    Rivera obtained from President Lázaro Cárdenas asylum in Mexico for the political exile Leon Trotsky and sheltered him and his wife Natalia Sedova in his own house; later a conflict arose between them.

  2. 1939

    Divorce from Frida Kahlo

    Their mutual infidelities and his violent temper led to divorce in 1939; they remarried on 8 December 1940 in San Francisco.

  3. 7 August 1939

    Expelled from the Mexican section of the Fourth International

    On 7 August 1939 Rivera was expelled from the Mexican section of the Trotskyist Fourth International.
