In the life of Camille Jacob Pissarro

The whole life
  1. 1872–1884

    Life in Pontoise

Back in France, Pissarro lived in Pontoise from 1872 to 1884, where he painted a great many pictures, keeping in touch with fellow artists, above all Monet, Renoir and Cézanne.

  2. 1874

    The first Impressionist exhibition

The group's first exhibition shocked and horrified the critics; Pissarro showed five landscapes and Émile Zola again praised his art. He became the only artist to show at all eight Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.

  3. 24 July 1874

    Son born: Félix Pissarro

  4. 1876

The critic Wolff and the “violet trees”

In his review of the Impressionist exhibition of 1876 the critic Albert Wolff demanded that someone make Pissarro understand that trees are not violet; Pissarro's authority among his Impressionist friends nevertheless remained consistently high.

  5. late 1870s

A plan for a journal of original prints

Pissarro, Degas and the American Mary Cassatt planned a journal of their original prints, but the project came to nothing when Degas withdrew.

  6. 21 November 1878

    Son born: Ludovic Rodo Pissarro
