In the life of Dorothea Lange

The whole life
  1. 1952

    Co-founds the magazine “Aperture”

    In 1952 Lange was one of the co-founders of the photography magazine Aperture.

  2. c. 1955

    Life commissions a story on the dying town of Monticello

    In the mid-1950s Life commissioned Lange and Pirkle Jones to document the death of the California town of Monticello, whose residents were displaced when Putah Creek was dammed to form Lake Berryessa. When Life decided not to run the piece, Lange devoted an entire issue of Aperture to it.

  3. 1955–1965

    Her health declines

    Lange’s health declined in the last decade of her life; among other conditions she suffered from what was later identified as post-polio syndrome.
