The whole life

    Studies at the Haarlem Academy under Goltzius and Van Mander

    Drebbel has already spent some years at the Latin school in Alkmaar. At Haarlem his teachers are Hendrik Goltzius — engraver, painter, alchemist and humanist — Karel van Mander and Cornelis Corneliszoon of Haarlem; he becomes a skilled copperplate engraver and takes an interest in alchemy.

    Marries Sophia Goltzius and settles in Alkmaar

    He marries Sophia Jansdochter Goltzius, the younger sister of Hendrick Goltzius; the couple have at least six children, of whom four survive. Drebbel works at first as a painter, engraver and cartographer, but is in constant need of money because of his wife’s profligate lifestyle.
