About the work

    The Paris salons of 1908

In spring he shows “Dance of the Odalisque” and “Nomad Family” from his African cycle at the Salon du Champ-de-Mars; in autumn he sends “The Shore” and “Sorceresses” to the Salon d’Automne and soon destroys the second.

  2. January 1909

First exhibitions in Russia after Paris

Back in Russia he shows his “Paris” and “African” works at Sergei Makovsky’s “Salon” in St Petersburg and at the Moscow “Golden Fleece” exhibition (“The Shore”, “Versailles”, “In the Luxembourg Garden”).

  3. November 1909

    First solo exhibition in Russia

The first solo exhibition of his work in Russia is held at the editorial office of the newly launched magazine Apollon.

  4. late 1910

Joins “Mir Iskusstva” and teaches at Zvantseva’s school

From late 1910 he is a member of the newly founded “World of Art” association; the same autumn he begins teaching at E. N. Zvantseva’s private art school in St Petersburg, succeeding Léon Bakst, who had been expelled from the capital.

  5. 2 – 6 March 1910

Repin’s letter on “The Dream” and the defence by Benois and Bakst

On 2 March Ilya Repin’s letter appears in Birzhevye Vedomosti; seeing decadence in the picture, he calls its author an ignoramus who imitates Matisse and Gauguin. Alexandre Benois (5 March) and Léon Bakst (6 March) come to his defence, and the quarrel runs on for several months.

  6. 28 August 1910

    Church wedding with Maria Fyodorovna

After several years in a civil marriage he marries Margarita Jovanović, now Maria Fyodorovna Petrova-Vodkina, in church at Khvalynsk. Other accounts say they were married in Paris as early as 1906.
