About the painting

In the museum's own words — in German

Tina Blau malt ihre monumentale Parklandschaft für die Internationale Ausstellung im Wiener Künstlerhaus im Jahr 1882. Einer Anekdote zufolge weist die Jury das Bild zunächst zurück mit der Begründung, es sei so hell, „dass es ein Loch in die Wand reißt“. Erst nach Fürsprache Hans Makarts wird das Werk ausgestellt. Es macht die Künstlerin schlagartig berühmt. 1883 wird es im Pariser Salon gezeigt und ausgezeichnet. Um Stimmungen, Licht und Details der Natur einzufangen, schiebt Tina Blau ihren mit Malutensilien beladenen Leiterwagen über Wald und Wiesen und malt direkt unter freiem Himmel. Frühling im Prater entsteht aufgrund seiner Größe jedoch in ihrem Atelier, das sich mitten im Wiener Prater befindet. Retrospektiv wird das Gemälde als das erste impressionistische Bild in der österreichischen Malerei bezeichnet.
