About the work

Harold Edgerton, inventor of the strobe light, was a path-breaking scientist and photographer. He held dozens of patents relating to his inventions in strobe technology and applied these high-powered repeatable flash devices to his photography practice.

The sharp stillness of this photograph of a boot making contact with a football, with its high-contrast lighting and resulting shadowy background, heightens the drama of a crucial point in the game.
