About the sculpture

This wax relief is made by Joaquim Machado de Castro (1733-1822) in Portugal in ca. 1770. Machado de Castro was the most celebrated Portuguese sculptor of the 18th century, and his reputation is based mainly on his bronze equestrian statue of King Joseph. He was appointed the official sculptor of Portugal in the reign of Queen Mary I. The Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro in Coimbra, inaugurated 1913, is named after him.
