Anverso: Figuras sentadas En primer plano, a la derecha, figura masculina sentada, de perfil a la izquierda. Se viste con traje y a la cabeza lleva sombrero tipo bombín. Junto a él, sentado posiblemente en el mismo banco, otra figura masculina, y al fondo parece que se distinguen otras figuras sentadas. Frente a ellos, otras figuras, parece que también sentadas en bancos, y algunas parecen femeninas. Parece que la representación tiene lugar en un exterior, y es posible que sea un mirador, ya que todas las figuras están mirando en la misma dirección, o quizá los asientos en algún tipo de transporte marítimo. Reverso (hoja 49): Patos Varios dibujos de patos, ya completos ya sólo de partes de su anatomía, en toda la hoja. En la zona superior, pato de perfil a la izquierda. Bajo éste, pato visto ligeramente desde arriba, y a su derecha, varios rasguños que parecen estudiar las curvaturas del cuerpo de los patos. En el centro, dos patos nadando juntos, muy sombreados, creando así la sensación de volumen. En la zona inferior, dos apuntes de cabezas de patos.

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
