    In 1542 Aertsen became a citizen (poorter) of Antwerp. His wife Kathelijne Beuckelaer was the daughter and sister of an Antwerp painter and the aunt of Joachim and Huybrecht Beuckelaer; of the couple's eight children, three sons — Pieter, Aert and Dirk — became successful painters (other accounts mention two sons).
