Meanwhile, in the life of Erich Mendelsohn

The whole life
  1. 1911–1914

    Close to the Blue Rider

In 1911–1914 Mendelsohn grew close to Kandinsky's Blue Rider group; he was also in contact with the Expressionist artists of Die Brücke.

  2. 1915

    Marries the cellist Luise Maas

In 1915 Mendelsohn married the cellist Luise Maas (1895–1980). Their correspondence of 1910–1953 tells of the life of an artist and a couple in a changing world, up to their flight from the Third Reich in 1933.

  3. October 1915

    Married: Luise Mendelsohn

  4. late 1918

    Opens his practice in Berlin

At the end of 1918, back from the First World War — from the front he had sent his wife letters full of sketches of factories and other large buildings — Mendelsohn set up his practice in Berlin (other accounts say 1919). It soon became one of the best-known offices in Germany, employing as many as forty people, among them the trainee Julius Posener, later an architectural historian.

  5. 1919

    Co-founds the November Group

In 1919 Mendelsohn, together with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Peter Behrens, organised the Novembergruppe, which brought together like-minded architects.

  6. 1924

    Co-founder of Der Ring

In 1924, along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, Mendelsohn was one of the founders of the progressive architectural group Der Ring.
