Links een officier, van opzij gezien, die zijn aanvoerdersstaf recht voor zich uit houdt. In het midden een soldaat, van voren gezien, zonder wapen. Rechts een soldaat, van opzij gezien, leunend op een stok of staf. Deze prent is onderdeel van een serie van 12 (13 incl. titelprent) prenten met voorstellingen van militaire (wapen)exercities. Op de meeste van die prenten staan drie soldaten in verschillende houdingen met een bepaald wapen of instrument.

In the year the large series of the “Miseries of War” is published, Lorraine is invaded by the French during the Thirty Years’ War; Callot’s etchings of pillaging, executions and the lot of crippled beggars are counted among the most powerful artistic statements of the inhumanity of war and will later inspire Goya.
