Anverso: La familia del pescador En primer plano, figura sentada en una silla, de espaldas a nosotros. Parece llevar pañoleta sobre los hombros que cuelga en forma de pico sobre la espalda. Tras su cabeza, asoma sutilmente otra cabeza. Frente a ellas, figura femenina de perfil, con pañuelo a la cabeza. El rostro se ha dejado sin dibujar. A la izquierda de la composición, personaje masculino sentado, de perfil. Lleva gorra sobre la cabeza y se inclina hacia delante apoyando las manos sobre las rodillas. Reverso: Estudio de bebé Figura infantil de frente. Puede que algunos de los trazos alrededor de su cuerpo correspondan a unas manos sujetándolo, pero el dibujo es rápido y nervioso y no se distingue bien.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
