About the work

In the museum's own words — in Dutch

Ester knielt voor koning Ahasveros. De koning wijst zijn scepter naar haar als teken van genegenheid. Ester verzoekt de koning om samen met Haman naar het door haar verzorgde feestmaal te komen. Rechts op de achtergrond het vervolg van het verhaal. De koning laat zich 's avonds voorlezen uit de kronieken van het rijk. Daarin staat dat Mordechai een aanslag op het leven van de koning heeft verijdeld. De koning vraagt aan Haman, die bij het bed staat, hoe iemand die het leven van de koning heeft gered geëerd moet worden. Op de achtergrond is te zien hoe Mordechai in het kleed van en op het paard van de koning wordt rondgereden, terwijl Haman hem rondleidt. Onder de voorstelling een verwijzing in het Latijn naar de Bijbeltekst in Est. 5-6.
