Anverso: Mercado de ganado, Avilés. Varios personajes en un mercado de ganado, entre numerosas reses. A la izquierda una figura femenina de perfil a la derecha, ataviada con saya, dengue sobre la camisa y pañuelo anudado en la cabeza. Hacia el centro dos figuras masculinas tocadas con sombreros parecen conversar. Al fondo a la derecha, otras dos figuras masculinas, también con sombreros. A la derecha, en primer término, tronco de árbol con la anotación Avilés. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 12790. Reverso: Esperando trabajo. León. Apunte rápido y algo confuso de varios personajes, femeninos y masculinos, bajo un soportal, del que vemos el arranque del arco a la izquierda. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 12792.

The whole life1900
Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
