Anverso: Mujer y hombre A la izquierda, figura femenina de cuerpo entero. Lleva indumentaria tradicional que se puede asociar al norte de España, con dengue y pañuelo anudado a la cabeza siguiendo la forma de ésta. Lleva un cesto colgando del brazo izquierdo y los brazos frente al pecho. Parece que por pendientes lleva aretes o arracadas. A la derecha, figura masculina casi de perfil. Lleva capa y sombrero de teja sobre la cabeza. Está sosteniendo algo entre las manos. Reverso: Escena rural En primer plano, cabeza de caballo o burro vista de perfil a la derecha. Tras ella, una estructura arquitectónica, y a la derecha, una figura masculina sentada, con sombrero a la cabeza.

The whole life1900
Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
