Anverso: Escena familiar A la derecha, figura femenina hasta las rodillas, de espaldas ligeramente de perfil. Lleva pañoleta sobre los hombros y el pelo recogido en moño. Está mirando al grupo de figuras de la izquierda: en primer plano, mujer de espaldas representada de medio cuerpo. Frente a ella, una mujer sentada, que se cubre la cabeza con pañuelo y tiene en sus brazos a un bebé. Al fondo se distinguen dos figuras, una masculina que se cubre con sombrero y otra que no se distingue. Reverso: Niños A la izquierda, dibujo muy ligero de una figura infantil sentada en una silla, vista de espaldas ligeramente de perfil. A la derecha, otra figura infantil de frente, parece que también sentada en una silla. El vestido se ha coloreado en blanco con el clarión.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
