Anverso: Escena de género En primer plano, una mujer de perfil a la derecha sentada en un banco. Lleva pañoleta o manto sobre los hombros, abrigándose, y sobre el regazo, un fardo que sujeta con las manos. Tras ella, en el banco, otras figuras sentadas, y al fondo a la derecha, un hombre de pie, apoyado en una puerta. Reverso: Jugando En el ángulo inferior izquierdo, esbozo de una silla en primer plano. Tras ella, una mujer de cuerpo entero, que parece que está sentada en el suelo, y le pasa un niño a otra figura femenina dibujada a la derecha del papel. La escena es un estudio de composición, con las figuras poco definidas.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
