Vista del interior de un café o restaurante. En primer plano, a la derecha, busto de hombre de perfil a la derecha, vestido con camisa y chaqueta y cubriéndose la cabeza con sombrero. Está fumando en pipa. En segundo plano, dos hombres enfrentados. Al primero lo vemos de espaldas, cubriéndose la cabeza con sombrero hongo, mientras que al segundo casi sólo lo intuimos. A la derecha, representación de mesas y todo el fondo muy rayado. En el reverso se ha copiado por contacto el dibujo con Nº Inv. 13147.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
