Anverso: Escena costumbrista A izquierda y derecha, referencias arquitectónicas a base de líneas rectas y ángulos, que no sabemos si corresponden con un interior o un exterior. Entre ellas, tres figuras, tan sólo abocetadas. La escena puede relacionarse con el reverso del dibujo con Nº Inv. 14324, ya que en ella también aparecen tres figuras. Se ha copiado por contacto el reverso del dibujo con Nº Inv. 14324. Reverso: Rasguños de figuras A la izquierda, figura que parece estar de pie, de perfil a la izquierda girado de tres cuartos hacia nosotros. Frente a esta figura se han insinuado otras tres, parece que arrodilladas.

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
