Этюд. На фоне высокого неба, в правой части холста изображен портик храма, в левой части далекие горы, ниже - полоска моря, этюд пронизан солнечным светом, воздухом. Блики голубого неба на архитектуре и земле. Освещение равномерное, тени цветные. Кариатиды портика даны обобщенно.

  1. 1881–1882

    First Journey to the Middle East

    In 1881–1882 Polenov, with the expedition of Prince Abamelek-Lazarev and Adrian Prakhov, made his first journey through the biblical lands — to Constantinople, Palestine, Syria, and Egypt — bringing back sketches for the canvas Christ and the Sinner and paintings in a manner new to him.

  2. 1882

    Marriage to Natalya Yakunchikova

    From 1882 Polenov was married to Natalya Vasilyevna Yakunchikova, daughter of a Moscow merchant and industrialist; the marriage produced six children.

  3. 1882–1895

    Teaching at the Moscow School of Painting

    In 1882–1895 Polenov taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; his students included Levitan, Korovin, Ostroukhov, Arkhipov, Golovin, and Tatevosyan.

  4. 1883–1884

    Work on Christ and the Sinner in Italy

    In 1883–1884 in Italy Polenov continued work on the painting Christ and the Sinner.
