Anverso: En la taberna. En primer plano dos figuras masculinas sentadas una frente a otra, conversando. Se acodan en la mesa junto a la que se sientan, donde descansa una jarra. Van tocados con gorras. En segundo término hay dos figuras masculinas a la izquierda, y en el centro una cuba. Al fondo arco de medio punto y unas escaleras que ascienden hacia la derecha. Reverso: En la taberna. Dos figuras masculinas casi de perfil a la izquierda, probablemente en una taberna. El de la izquierda acodado en la mesa frente a la que se sienta, ataviado con chaleco y gorra. Sobre él apunte de una cabeza. El de la derecha de pie, tocado con sombrero. Los trazos que se superponen al dibujo pertenecen al dibujo nº Inv. 12297, que se ha copiado por contacto.

The whole life1900
Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
