    Bastien-Lepage’s fame is such that by 1883 a critic remarks that so many artists now paint in his manner that he seems to paint like everyone. His en plein air scenes of peasant life strongly influence many artists abroad, among them George Clausen in England and Tom Roberts in Australia.

    Made a Knight of the Order of Leopold

    In 1883 Bastien-Lepage is made a Knight of the Order of Leopold; the same year he paints the portrait of Mme J. Drouet.

    Marie Bashkirtseff dies in the same year as he does

    Marie Bashkirtseff, a close friend of Bastien-Lepage and a Ukrainian-born painter who took her cue from his admiration for nature, scores a great success at the Salon of 1884 with “A Meeting” (now in the Musée d’Orsay) and dies of chronic illness the same year, as he does.
