Иван Иванович Шишкин стал художником, одним из самых верных Товариществу передвижных художественных выставок, участвуя во всех, начиная с первого в года его учреждения. На протяжении жизни излюбленными сюжетами для мастера являлись изображения величественного мира леса с его заросшими чащами, мшистой почвой и густой растительностью, с могучей листвой раскидистых дубов и колючими лапами веток елей и сосен. Неслучайно «лесным царем» называл Третьяков Шишкина, знатока и любителя природы, до совершенства знавшего «анатомию» деревьев и растений разных пород. Крамской говорил о живописце: «Шишкин - верстовой столб в развитии русского пейзажа, это человек-школа. Но живая школа».

Небольшая работа, передающая свежий, ароматный воздух леса, была исполнена в Вологодской губернии, где художник провел лето 1887 года. В неоконченном этюде передана удивительно живая, согретая погожим солнечным днем атмосфера. При всей незавершенности работы чувствуется самобытная «лаборатория» художника, чья кисть словно «прощупывает» отстающую кору дерева, фиксирует каждую нить «покрова» земли, сотканного из тончайших травинок и душистых соцветий. Шишкину невероятным образом удалось погрузить зрителя в этот удивительный уголок природы, дать вдохнуть запах леса, согреться солнечными лучами, проступающими сквозь изумрудную зелень.
