About the work

Portrait of a blacksmith and a young boy standing in front of an anvil on a log, as each hold one end of a horseshoe. The man holds the handle of a blacksmith's hammer, also called a cross pein hammer, which he rests on the anvil. A large mallet lies on the log next to the anvil, and a pair of tongs straddle the anvil's nose.
