May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
The drawing was acquired at the same time as another work attruibuted to the same artist (see E.490-1973) and is probably by the same hand. The costume likewise situates the subject in Vollendam or environs, a fishing village at the mouth of the River IJ and the Zuiderzee in North Holland, near Edam. It was very much en vogue as an artists’ retreat in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: from c. 1890 onwards, many artists—including Picasso and Renoir––stayed there for a few days to record the picturesque surroundings in drawings, watercolours and paintings.
