It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This is a sketch of one of the novel's main characters, Rosa Bud, apparently sitting in a seat. The image of her - without the seat - was subsequently incorporated into an illustration entitled Up The River. The published version shows Rosa and Mr Grewgious sitting in a boat on the river Thames, along with Mr. Tartar and Lobley.
The V&A also holds a sketch of the bridge and various buildings that appear in the background of the published image (E.788-1971).
