Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This sketch is for an illustration entitled At The Piano, which shows many of the novel's main characters in John Jasper's drawing room. Mr Jasper is playing the piano while Rosa Bud is singing, with Helena Landless behind her. This sketch shows Mr Crisparkle, who is seated at the right hand side of the room.
