Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This is a sketch of Rosa Bud's hands and an umbrella handle, for an illustration entitled Under The Trees. The published image features Edwin and his unhappy fiancée, Rosa, sitting on a bench next to Cloisterham Cathedral.
