May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
Pen and ink illustration created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. Pencil annotation above the sketch suggests that it shows a scene from King Lear. The illustration is not dated or signed and the actors are not identified, but they bear a marked resemblance to Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) and Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) who staged a production of King Learat the Lyceum Theatre in 1892.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
