Queen Victoria buys “Cimabue’s Madonna”
In 1855 Leighton finished “Cimabue’s Madonna” and sent it to London for the Royal Academy exhibition. The picture was a success, Queen Victoria bought it for 600 guineas, and the artist became the talk of England’s aristocratic circles.

Years in Paris: Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, Millet
In 1855 Leighton visited the Exposition Universelle in Paris and, with interruptions, lived there for the next three years (by other accounts until 1859), perfecting his craft. In Paris he met Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet.

Meets the poet Henry William Greville
In Florence in 1856 Leighton met the poet Henry William Greville; theirs was an intense, romantically tinged relationship: the older man showered Leighton with letters, but his affection seems not to have been reciprocated. Leighton never married.

A trip to Algeria starts his passion for the East
In 1857 Leighton made his first trip outside Europe, to Algeria. The journey started his fascination with Eastern culture, whose motifs he would often use in his paintings; later he visited Syria, Egypt and Turkey.
