France Purchases "Whistler's Mother"
In 1891, with the assistance of Stéphane Mallarmé, the painting "Whistler's Mother" was bought by the French government for 4,000 francs — less than an American collector might have paid, but more prestigious in the artist's eyes.

Move to Paris
In 1892, after the cool reception of his London exhibition, Whistler and his wife moved to Paris (110 Rue du Bac), setting up a studio in Montparnasse. He associated closely with Monet, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Mallarmé.

Death of His Wife Beatrice
After Beatrice was found to have cancer, the couple returned to London in February 1896, to the Savoy Hotel. She died on 10 May 1896; her death was a blow from which Whistler never recovered.

Founding of the Académie Carmen
In 1898 Whistler, together with Carmen Rossi, founded an art school, the Académie Carmen, but owing to his failing health he was forced to close it on 6 April 1901.
