About the sculpture

Diana Hobson is a multidisciplinary artist who has been working across mediums for over six decades. She was born in Stoke on Trent in 1943 and now lives and works in the Santa Cruz Mountains, North California. She studied Ceramic Design at the North Staffordshire College of Technology and began working in metal shortly after. From 1972-73 she worked as an enamellist for Wendy Ramshaw and completed an MA at the Royal College of Art from 1973-6. She has since worked across silver, glass, mixed media, sculpture, installation and photography. In 1980 she researched and helped to revive the French glass making process of pâte de verre and examples of this work are well represented in the V&A collection. Work from across her career also sits in many other organisations including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Tate Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art and has been included in numerous exhibitions internationally as well as many publications.

Throughout her career and across mediums her work has consistently been inspired by a strong connection to the land and the interrelatedness of all life forms. A recent project in Iceland involved capturing impressions directly from the land and peeled away as memory of the earth itself and she has worked in a similar way with California’s Coastal Redwoods and at the Arboretum in UC Santa Cruz. 'Double Bowl' is an early work by Hobson in silver, gold and cast glass and is made up of two silver bowls which sit one inside the other. The inner has a stream of 24 carat gold across the centre and is mounted with a carved glass head.
