Anverso: Pescadores en la barca. Varios pescadores sentados en una barca, vista desde estribor. En la zona de popa un pescador de pie, casi de perfil a la derecha. El mástil de la embarción, en el centro, ligeramente inclinado hacia la derecha, con los cabos tensos por el viento que hincha las velas. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 12995. Reverso: Dos pescadoras. Dos figuras femeninas, pescadoras, de pie y de cuerpo entero, una de espaldas y la otra de perfil a la izquierda. Van ataviadas con largas faldas y pañuelos sobre la cabeza. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 12997.

    Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition

    “Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

    A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”

    The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
