Пейзаж с извилистой, уходящей к горизонту дорогой. По покрытой зелёной травой земле от левого нижнего угла вглубь - коричневая извилистая дорога. Справа - узкая, извилистая речка с зарослями кустарника по берегам, в глубине - тёмно-зелёная роща. Слева, у дороги - лошадь, в глубине - заросли деревьев. Серое, в синих тучах небо.

After a second bout of typhus the symptoms of an aneurysm of the heart worsen; the illness becomes grave and incurable.

An exhibition in Odessa with Simov and Popov
A joint exhibition of paintings and watercolours by Isaac Levitan, Viktor Simov and Alexander Popov is held in Odessa.

A few weeks in Finland
He travels to Finland for a few weeks and paints “Fortress. Finland” (Olavinlinna castle in Savonlinna), “Rocks”, “Sea” and “Punkaharju”; in 1897 he finishes “Remnants of the Past. Twilight. Finland”.

The title of academician and teaching at his old school
He is awarded the title of academician of landscape painting and begins teaching at the very school where he studied; he dreams of creating a “House of Landscapes” — a large studio where all Russian landscape painters could work.
