«Домашний арест» – одна из ранних картин М.В. Нестерова, которую он сам высоко оценивал. В недавнем прошлом ученик В.Г. Перова, художник называл ее «своим первым трудом и умением», ступенью самостоятельной творческой биографии. На картине тщательно выписаны детали быта семьи мелкого чиновника. У незадачливого хозяина дома отобрали сапоги, и он сидит на сундуке и вяжет, виновато глядя на свою супругу. Сюжет воспринимается не столько как смешной анекдот, сколько в качестве курьезной, досадной истории, будто подсмотренной в замочную скважину. В своих рассказах художник ласково называет героя сцены Петей, а саму картину – «Вспышкой у домашнего очага (сцена из мелкочиновной жизни)».

Попробовав себя в жанре, впоследствии Нестеров отошел от подробной иллюстративности ранних произведений. Художник нашел собственный путь в искусстве, выработав стиль, который он назвал «опоэтизированным реализмом».

    Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture

  2. 1881

    Moves to St Petersburg to join the Academy

    Nesterov entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in Pavel Chistyakov's class, but the Petersburg academy disappointed him.

  3. 1882

    Portrait of the dying Perov

    Nesterov returned to Moscow hoping to study with Perov again, but his beloved teacher was already dying; he managed to paint a portrait of his fading mentor and re-entered the school under Alexei Savrasov.

  4. summer 1883

    Meets Maria Martynovskaya

    Nesterov spent the summer of 1883 in Ufa, where he met Maria Ivanovna Martynovskaya, his future wife. Back in Moscow he studied in Vladimir Makovsky's class.

  5. summer 1885

    Marries Maria Martynovskaya against his parents' will

    In the summer of 1885, against his parents' wishes, Nesterov married Maria Ivanovna Martynovskaya; after the wedding he went on earning his living by illustrating Pushkin, Gogol and Dostoevsky.

  6. 1885

    Awarded the title of Free Artist

    For the painting “The Calling of Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov to the Throne” Nesterov received the title of Free Artist; a year later “Petitioners to the Tsar” earned him the title of Class Artist and the Large Silver Medal. By the late 1880s he was known for his pictures of pre-Petrine Russia.
