In the life of Bernardo Bellotto
The whole lifeOctober 1763
His patrons Augustus III and Count Brühl die
Elector Augustus III and Count Heinrich von Brühl both died, and Bellotto lost his chief patrons: their successors took little interest in painting.
1764
On the way to St Petersburg, accepts a post in Warsaw
Finding no place for himself in Dresden, Bellotto set out to seek employment at the court of Catherine the Great in St Petersburg, but on the way accepted an invitation from Poland's newly elected King Stanisław August Poniatowski to become his court painter in Warsaw. By some accounts this was in 1764, with the post beginning in 1768; by others he was the King's court painter from 1767.
1764
A reduced salary: from vedute to capriccios
At the new Academy of Fine Arts, oriented towards Neoclassicism, Bellotto became professor of perspective, but his salary was cut to 600 thalers. With no more commissions for vedute, he turned, as Canaletto had before him, to capriccios, architectural fantasies.
1766–1780
Post: court painter
