The first edition of the “Lives”

The “Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects”, dedicated to Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, presented the development of art as a history of heroic creators; Vasari introduced in print the term “Rinascita” (“rebirth”) for the change in artistic styles that began with Giotto.

  3. 1550

Finishes the manuscript of the “Lives”

Vasari took great care over his work on the artists of his day: he gave part of the manuscript to Annibale Caro, who helped with comments, and the monk Matteo Faetani made substantial corrections at his request; the book was finished in 1550.

  4. 1563

Helps found the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno

With Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici and Michelangelo as heads of the institution, Vasari helped found the Florentine Accademia e Compagnia delle Arti del Disegno; thirty-six artists were chosen as members.

  5. 1568

The second edition of the “Lives”, with portraits

In 1568 the book appeared partly rewritten and extended, with woodcut portraits of artists (some conjectural); between the editions Vasari visited Venice, and the second edition gave more attention to Venetian art, finally including Titian.
