About the painting

Eine junge Frau inmitten einer eisigen Landschaft. Mit ihrem Kind an der Brust ist sie im Astwerk eines Baumes gefangen. Den Kopf zur Seite gedreht, den Körper gebeugt, sträubt sich die Mutter mit aller Kraft gegen den Säugling. Giovanni Segantini zeigt uns in dieser kahlen Bergwelt das Schicksal von Frauen, die körperliches Verlangen zwar ausleben, Mutterschaft aber verweigern. Es seien, so der Maler selbst über sein moralisierendes Bild, „die Geißeln des Fegefeuers“, die solche Mütter zur Strafe erleiden müssten. Den Frauen bleibt nichts, als ihre Bestimmung anzunehmen, um zur Erlösung zu finden. Mit ihren Kindern tanzen sie geläutert im Hintergrund den Bergen entgegen.
