About the work
This design for a commode has been attributed to Thomas Chippendale, a fashionable London cabinet-maker. This design for a rococo bureau dressing table features a measurement scale and an outline of the corner of the table top. The presence of these features indicate that this design may have been used within the Chippendale workshop, however many of the plates within Chippendale’s pattern book, the Director, also include such details. Therefore this design may have been intended as a model for other furniture makers or as a presentation piece to show clients. The asymmetrical details within the design also demonstrate the types of decoration that could be chosen. The Director was a popular pattern book produced by Thomas Chippendale in three editions, in 1754, 1755 and 1762, which featured designs for household furniture and instructions for their production.
