About the work

Erasmus Hornick (d. 1583) was a Flemish goldsmith, printmaker, and designer. He worked from c. 1555–83 and found increasing success in Augsburg, Nuremberg, and finally in Prague at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II, alongside many other Flemish, German, and Italian artists. Although his work was in keeping with his contemporaries, Hornick’s work was among the most adventurous of the Mannerist style.

These 276 drawings, mostly just in pen, ink and wash, are mostly attributed to Hornick and his coterie, though some have been identified as the work of the famed goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507/08–1585) and others as copies of the work of Italian painter Francesco Salviati (1510–63).
