Anverso: De paseo A la izquierda, grupo de dos figuras avanzando de perfil a la derecha. En primer plano, una figura femenina, muy esquemática. Tras ella, a la izquierda, asoma una figura de un caballero vestido con chaqueta y sombrero a la cabeza, contrastando con la figura de la mujer porque se ha rayado su indumentaria. Por detrás de la mujer, a su derecha, unos rasguños. En la zona derecha de la hoja, figura femenina de perfil a la derecha. La parte trasera de la falda está abultada por el uso de polisón. A la cabeza lleva sombrero, parece que un tricornio. Reverso: Dos mujeres A la izquierda, figura femenina de perfil a la derecha. En el centro del papel, otra figura femenina, acéfala, vista casi desde atrás, destacando el polisón que abulta la falda en la parte trasera.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
