About the work

In the museum's own words — in Dutch

De hooiwagen. Allegorie op de zondigheid van de mens: waarschuwing om het goede te doen en het kwade te laten in de vorm van talloze spreekwoorden. De figuren in de verbeelde spreekwoorden hebben allen een bosje hooi in de hand; bij alle spreekwoorden opschriften met commentaar in het Nederlands. In het midden op de voorgrond Vrouw Wereld als elegante dame met spiegel met pauwenveren in de ene hand, een bos hooi in de andere. Tegenover haar een luitspeler met zandloper, waar het zand uit loopt. Links op het tweede plan een man in geknielde houding voor een standbeeld van Mars, met op zijn wapenschild de namen van Luther, Calvijn en Menno (Simons); hierbij een waarschuwing tegen het aanbidden van vreende goden. Hoofdthema: het is al hooi = alles is ijdelheid/vergankelijk. Bovenaan de duivel met een hooiwagen, hierbij het spreekwoord: Comt al om hooy, met grooten hoopen / Ick sals u ghenoech gheven, ghij en hoeft gheene te koope[n].
