About the work
The fourth and final state of this print was almost never printed with surface tone. As a result, not only is the interior and division of space again fully distinguishable, but the figures’ quiet immersion in their sorrow is all the more palpable.

In 1654 Rembrandt and Hendrickje's daughter Cornelia was born; the parish council censured Hendrickje for "sinful cohabitation" with the artist.

Under pressure from creditors, Rembrandt declared himself insolvent (cessio bonorum) in July 1656 and voluntarily surrendered his property; by that time he had already transferred the house to his son.
