From 1908 until the revolution he publishes his “Art Letters” in the newspaper Rech. One of the most significant art critics of the early twentieth century, he brought into circulation the terms “avant-garde”, “Russian Cézannism” and “Russian neoclassicism”.

Protecting monuments after the February Revolution
After the February Revolution he takes an active part in the work of organizations concerned with protecting monuments of art and antiquity.
1918–1926
Heads the Hermitage picture gallery
Becomes curator of the Hermitage picture gallery — the collection of Old Masters — and serves until 1926 (other accounts say he took charge of the gallery in 1919). Continues working as a book and theatre artist and director, notably on productions of the Bolshoi Drama Theatre in Petrograd.
