About the work

A collage of images cut from Paul Outerbridge's book, "Command Performance," featuring nude women. The women's images are layered on top of one another in sexualized and/or absurd positions. Alongside them are cut images of plants and objects. The collage is layered upon a bound cover of the book, the pages of which have been removed to create a flat support for the artist's work. Drawing inspiration from Valerie Solanas’ feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting up Men) Manifesto, produced in the late 1960s, Kurland founded her own related initiative: the Society for Cutting up Men’s Books. Using photobooks from her personal library, she selected monographs that featured the work of white male photographers and excised images from their publications, which she then repurposed and reimagined in the form of collages.
