The whole life1954
First American show, at the Martha Jackson Gallery
Appel's first American gallery exhibition was held at the Martha Jackson Gallery. In America he also painted portraits of prominent jazz musicians, among them Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

Prize at the Venice Biennale
Appel won a prize at the Venice Biennale and, the same year, the International Prize for graphic art at the Ljubljana Biennial.

“Child and Beast II” in MoMA's “The New Decade”
His painting “Child and Beast II” (1951) was included in the influential Museum of Modern Art exhibition “The New Decade”, which featured twenty-two European painters and sculptors, among them newcomers such as Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Soulages.
