About the work

Pen and ink caricature of the actress and singer Clarice Mayne (1886-1966), signed and dated by the artist, J.L. Dale, 1910.

Clarice Mayne was a singer, actress and music hall performer who established her career playing principal girl and boy roles in pantomimes. She was best known for the song "A Broken Dolly" written by her husband, the composer James W. Tate, and lyricist Frank Clifford Harris. She acted on the stage in both the United Kingdom and America, and also appeared in a number of films.
