About the work
Provenance: purchase from P & D Colnaghi in 1921
This drawing of Chinese shops and figures was made by George Chinnery during his long residence in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852. Awnings are propped open to allow access to the ground-floor shops; above are dwellings, and above those is a bamboo superstructure on which clothes are hung out to dry.
